Zithromax is an antibiotic drug. It contains Azithromycin as its main active ingredient. It belongs to a group of drugs called macrolide antibiotics. It is used to treat bacterial infections. It is also used to treat certain sexually transmitted infections.

Uses of Zithromax

It is used for treatment of different types of bacterial infections. It is prescribed for treatment of respiratory infections, skin infections, ear infections, and sexually transmitted diseases, which are caused due to bacterial infection.

It is also used for treatment of bacterial infections such as middle ear infection, pneumonia, tonsillitis and strep throat in children.

Doctor may prescribe Zithromax or Azithromycin for other purposes not listed in this medication guide as well, based on clinical judgement.

Dosages

Dosages could differ depending on the infections. Patients should stick to the dosages as prescribed by doctor.  The medicine should be taken for the full prescribed duration of time.

Zithromax should be stored at room temperature. It should be exposed to moisture and heat.

Precautions before using Zithromax

  • Patients allergic to azithromycin or similar drugs such as erythromycin, clarithromycin or troleandomycin should not use Zithromax. They should also avoid this drug if they are allergic to any of its active or inactive ingredients.
  • Patients should tell their doctor about any medicine being used before using Zithromax as it can interact with other medicines, vitamins, minerals or herbal products. This interaction could result into health complications. Patients should also not start taking any medicine without asking the doctor, while using Zithromax.
  • Patients should stick to the prescribed dosages and duration of this medicine.
  • Zithromax is not used for treatment of a viral infection such as the common cold or flu.
  • It should be taken empty stomach, 1-2 hours before meal.
  • Patients should avoid taking antacids containing aluminium or magnesium while using Zithromax. These drugs could slow down the function of Zithromax.
  • Patients should tell their medical history to the doctor before starting use of Zithromax. It could worsen certain medical conditions such as liver disease, kidney disease, a certain muscle disease called myasthenia gravis.
  • Patients should tell their doctor about their use of Zithromax before going for any surgery or dental work.
  • This drug should not be used during pregnancy. It should only be used in pregnancy, if the doctor finds its use essential. Though it is expected to not harm the baby, it is advisable to avoid as its harmful effects are not fully known.
  • This drug could easily pass into breast milk thus breast-feeling patients should consult their doctor before using it.
  • Patients should avoid exposure to sun light or tanning beds while using Zithromax. It makes sunburn easy. Patients should use proper clothing and sunscreen before going in the sun.
  • In case of overdose of Zithromax, patients should immediately seek medical assistance. Its overdose symptoms are nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and stomach discomfort.
  • Use of antibiotics such as Zithromax could cause diarrhoea, which indicates another infection. In that case patient should stop using it and consult their doctor.
  • Patients with history of a heart rhythm disorder or prolonged QT syndrome should not use Zithromax.  It can worsen the condition of the patient. Zithromax may cause QT prolongation. Patients suffering from heart failure, slow heartbeat, QT prolongation in the EKG, family history of certain heart problems are at higher risk. Patients suffering from low levels of potassium or magnesium in the blood are also at increased risk.
