Gallbladder cancer is a rare cancer and the symptoms which can be seen in the patients are abdominal pain, jaundice & vomiting. There are various types of gallbladder cancer and they are described below:

It is the most common type of cancer.  Adenocarcinomas are a type of cancer which starts within the gallbladder cells in the external & internal surfaces of the body. The gland cells produces mucus. 85 out of every 100 gallbladder cancers are adenocarcinoma. There are three types of adenocarcinoma cancer:

  • Non papillary adenocarcinoma
  • Papillary adenocarcinoma
  • Mucinous adenocarcinoma

The papillary adenocarcinoma is developed in the connective tissues of the gallbladder which means the tissues that hold the gallbladder. There are very less chances that it will spread to liver or lymph nodes near to gallbladder.

Mucinous adenocarcinomais a very rare type of gallbladder cancer. May be 1 or 2 out of every 100 diagnosed with gallbladder cancer are diagnosed with Mucinous adenocarcinoma. In this, the cancer cells are present in the pool of mucus.

Squamous Cell Carcinomas:

This type of cell cancer develops from the skin cells which form the lining of gallbladder along with the gland cells. This type of cancer is rare and is more likely to develop in women than in men in the ratio of 3:1.

Adenosquamous cancer :

Cancer which consists of both squamous cancer cells and grandular cancer cells is known as adenosquamous cancer of the gallbladder. Adenosquamous cancer develops when a large tumor of a neighboring organ is formed very quickly & is difficult to stop but metastasis is not present in lymph nodes or viscera. But it is treated in the same way as adenocarcinoma.

Small cell cancer of the gallbladder:

Small cell cancer is a rare disease and is mostly found in elderly women who are prone to cigarette smoking. It is also known as oat cell carcinoma because the cancer cells are oat shaped. Small cell cancer arises from cells which can differentiate endocrine & epithelial.

Sarcoma of the gallbladder:

Sarcoma cancer is a type of cancer which affects connective tissues of the body. The connective tissues in our body are muscles, blood vessels & nerves. Sarcoma of the gallbladder is the cancer which starts in the muscle of the gallbladder.

Neuroendocrine tumor of the gallbladder:

This type of tumor develops from tissues which produces hormones and is a very rare type of cancer. Carcinoid is the most common type of neuroendocrine tumor.
