There are many methods to treat Basal Cell Carcinoma. The method depends on the disease’s extent and the body part, where it has occurred. This disease is easily treatable if diagnosed timely. The location and size of the cancerous tumor, the risk of scarring, and the person’s age, general health, and medical history are considered before opting a treatment method. Doctor may choose any method or combination of more than one method depending on the above mentioned factors. Some of the methods used for treatment of this disease are listed below.

One of the methods to treat Basal Cell Carcinoma in initial stages is surgery. Doctors remove cancerous tumor through surgery.

This is another method of treatment for this disease. In this method liquid nitrogen is applied on the cancerous tumor growth. It freezes and kills the cancerous cell. But it is not widely used and is done only by experts.

Micrographic surgery:

In this method a small piece of the tumor is removed and examined under the microscope. By repeating this process, whole tumor is removed. This process does not require estimation of the width and depth of the lesion before surgery as it takes place simultaneously. This method is highly effective and harms healthy tissues the least. This method is usually applied for large or recurring basal cell carcinoma. If large amount of tissues are needed to removed, plastic or reconstructive surgeon also works with surgeons to assure post surgical appearance is as good as possible.

Curettage and Desiccation:

In this method basal cell carcinoma is scooped out by a curette, which is a spoon like instrument. In desiccation an electric current is used to control bleeding and kill remaining cancer cells. This is usually used for small cancerous tumors.

Radiation Therapy:

Radiation is used for treatment of basal cell carcinoma at place, where surgery is not possible. Radiation is given on the affected area to kill cancerous cells and prevent their further growth.

For treatment of some basal cell carcinoma, creams are also used. These creams attack cancer cells. They also revive immune system, so that body’s defence system gets active. These creams could cause discomfort on the area of application, but their use can prevent the need of surgery.

Prevention of Basal Cell Carcinoma

The major cause for occurrence of this disease is over-exposure to sun. By preventing undue exposure to sun, one can avoid development of this disease to a large extent. People having risk factors for basal cell carcinoma should go for regular physical examination, so that disease is detected in the early stages. It helps in full recovery from this skin cancer. People who have suffered any type of skin cancer are at a higher risk of developing this disease. They should go for regular medical check-ups. By following certain precautions one can prevent development of this disease:

  • Limit over exposure to sun.
  • People should not go unprotected, out in the sun during peak radiation times or noon.
  • Covering oneself with protective cloths and hats, while going out in sun also helps.
  • Regular use of waterproof sunscreen with UVA protection and SPF 30 or higher reduces the risk of this type of cancer.
  • Avoiding tanning booths as these booths use ultraviolet rays for tanning, which increases risk of this disease.
  • People with risk factors or suspicious-looking or changing lesions should go for regular check-ups.
