In a new press release released by the FDA, California based Sugar Flowers Plus is recalling Cake Decors Pastillage (gum paste) Flowers because of the undeclared use of egg white wash used as a glue for the inner petals of the flowers. The company has warned consumers of using the affected product. It has also said that those with an allergy or severe sensitivity to egg whites could have a life-threatening reaction if they consume the product. Some side effects that consumers may suffer using the affected products are:

  • Eczema and Skin rashes
  • Skin allergic reactions
  • Allergic conjunctivitis (itchy, red, watery eyes)
  • Nausea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Asthma
  • Runny nose
  • Respiratory tract symptoms

According to the reports from the company the recall was issued after a recent mild allergic reaction was reported to the federal agency in regard to Cake Decors Pastillage (gumpaste) Line that the consumers are using since 2002. The report reveals that the Consumer complained of itchy (tickling) in throat after consuming a small portion of outer petal of Pastillage (gumpaste) Rose – Pink.

Though, the consumer was not taken in for medical care as the symptoms alleviated after a few hours still the company issued voluntary recall of the product to avoid any such mishaps in future. There are no medical records available to substantiate the fact that that symptoms were due to consumption of product; however egg white wash is used within the product as an adhesive to the inner two petals of the flower but not an ingredient within the Pastillage (gumpaste) dough itself to form the rose.
