Zelnorm is brand name for tegaserod maleate. It is used to treat Chronic Idiopathic Constipation in men and women under the age of 65 and Irritable Bowel Syndrome in women. Side effects of this medication are as follows:

  • Headache
  • Joint Pain
  • Back pain
  • Mild stomach pain, nausea or gas
  • Dizziness, lightheadedness and fainting
  • Weakness
  • Irregular heart beats
  • Heart attack or other heart related problems
  • Severe abdominal cramping
  • Ischemic Colitis
  • Bloody Stool
  • A worsening of stomach pain
  • New abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea (note: Diarrhea lasting longer than 3 days can cause extreme dehydration and lead to fatality. See your doctor right away if this occurs)

Allergic reactions to the drug can include, but are not limited to, symptoms such as:

  • Rash
  • Itching
  • Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat
  • Severe dizziness
  • Trouble breathing

There may be many more side effects. It is advisable to consult a doctor if any of these side effects occur.

ZelnormĀ  should not be taken in following conditions.

  • Diarrhea as the main symptom of their irritable bowel syndrome
  • if you are allergic to tegaserod
  • if you have a history of stroke
  • if you have a history of high blood pressure
  • if you have high cholesterol or triglycerides
  • if you have uncontrolled angina
  • if you have diabetes
  • if you have depression
  • if you have anxiety
  • if you smoke
  • if you are over 55 years
  • if you are overweight
  • if you have history of suicidal thoughts
  • if you have gallbladder problems
  • if you have blockage in intestine
  • if you have any kidney problem
  • if you have any liver disease
