SIDE-EFFECTS of Baycol
Baycol, trade name of cerivastatin, was a popular cholesterol lowering drug. It was manufactured by Bayer A.G. pharmaceutical company in 1990 and approved by FDA in the U.S. in 1997. However within no time the drug reported rhabdomyolysis, peripheral neuropathy, flu-like symptoms, dark urine, yellowness of skin and eyes and many more. So by August 2001, Bayor, the manufacturer of the drug called of the medicine worldwide. It is believed that within these four years of approval to being called off, the drug caused over 100 deaths.
Rhabdomyolysis and Peripheral Neuropathy were the two main serious side- effects reported till date.
- Rhabdomyolysis- is a fatal muscle reaction in which the cells in the muscles breakdown and release muscle fiber contents (myoglobin) in to the bloodstream. Kidneys filter myoglobin out of the body and in the process myoglobin breaks into harmful compounds thereby blocking the structures of kidneys. This is how rhabdomyolysis causes kidney failures. Dark urine, muscle pain, vomiting, fever, nausea, fatigue, unintentional weight gain and tenderness are some of the common symptoms of the disease. Rhabdomyolysis is a critical ailment and has even led to sudden deaths.
- Peripheral Neuropathy- Peripheral nerves are the nerves responsible to carry information to and fro from brain and spinal cord to other parts of the body. As a side effect of Baycol, the person may start losing sensations of hands and feet pertinently. Symptoms of this disease largely depend upon the extent of damage done to nerves. Pain, numbness, muscle problems, problems with body organs are some of the common symptoms of the disease.
Other not so serious side effects reported were:
- Allergic reactions like rashes
- Stomach related problems like bloating, heartburn, gas, constipation or diarrhea.
The above mentioned list of side effects is not an exhaustive list of the discomforts that a person may suffer from. So if the person experiences any discomfort that is bothersome, the same should be consulted with the practitioner at once.
Elderly people, pregnant ladies, ladies planning pregnancy and nursing mothers should take this medicine with utmost care and only under medical supervision. FDA has marked Baycol in category X of medicine, which implies that it is known to cause birth defects if taken during pregnancy. Also, if passed to nursing babies through breast milk, baycol can cause some serious side effects to the infants.
In case you have missed a dose, then take the same as soon as you remember it. However if it’s at the time of your next dose then skip the last dose and resume the course thereafter. In case you have taken an overdose, do seek medical help without any delays.
