Seldane is an oral drug belonging to the antihistamine group of medicines. It is used to treat allergies. It is used to treat running nose, itching and watering of eyes. It also prevents sneezing. Doctors prescribe it for treatment of allergic symptoms such as hives, inflammation and other allergic symptoms. It is also prescribed for purposes other than listed in medical guide by doctors based on clinical judgment. It was withdrawn from market in 1998 in U.S. due to safety concerns.


Seldane mainly contains terfenadine as main active ingredient. It is oral tablet, which contains 60mg terfenadine in each tablet. It chemical name is alpha-[4-(1,1-Dimethylethyl) phenyl]-4- (hydroxydiphenylmethyl) -1-piperidine-butanol (±). Its molecular weight is 471.68. Its chemical formula is C32H41NO2. Terfenadine belongs to histamine H1-receptor antagonist group of drugs.

Seldane also contains cornstarch, gelatin, lactose, magnesium stearate and sodium bicarbonate as inactive ingredient. Terfenadine is a white to off-white powder with crystalline nature. It could easily dissolve in ethanol and chloroform. It is very slightly soluble in water.

  • Seldane is an antihistamine drug and has been banned in 1998 from U.S. market.

Precautions before Using Seldane

Before using Seldane one should take following precautions to avoid any harm as a result of use of this medicine.

  • Consult your doctor before using Seldane if you are suffering from asthma or another lung disease.
  • Consult your doctor before going for this medicine if you are suffering from low potassium levels in your blood.
  • If you are suffering from urinary retention or an enlarged prostate; consult your doctor before using this drug.
  • Tell your doctor before taking this drug, if you are suffering from any kidney problem.
  • Tell your doctor before using this drug if you have any liver disease.
  • If you are suffering from any heart disease, especially an irregular heartbeat, consult your doctor before using it.
  • If you are using the antifungal drugs, the antibiotics erythromycin or ulcer drug, do not take Seldane.
  • Be sure to store terfenadine at room temperature. It should be kept away from moisture and heat.
  • Do not take any other medicine without consulting your doctor, while using Seldane.
  • Stick to the prescribed dosages as overdose could lead to headache, drowsiness, irregular heartbeat, nausea, and vomiting.
  • Use of Seldane could lead to dizziness and drowsiness. Avoid or be cautious in activities needing high level of alert such as driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities.
  • Use of alcohol, while using Seldane could increase drowsiness and dizziness. Avoid or keep caution while consuming alcohol.
  • Use of this drug could cause irregular heartbeats, immediately call your doctor in such case.
  • Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if you are using any other medicine.
  • Do not take Seldane if you are pregnant or planning to be pregnant as its effects on unborn child is not known yet.
  • Avoid this drug if you are breast-feeding as it could harm your child.
