Propulsid is brand name for cisapride. It comes in both tablets and suspension. Cisapride increases the rate of digestion. It also increases bowel movements and strengthens the muscle between stomach and esophagus.

It is used for treatment of gastric reflux, which results in heartburn. It regulates the level of stomach acid in esophagus. Doctors prescribe it for other purposes as well.

Structural Formula

Propulsid has cisapride as main active ingredient. Cisapride is present in monohydrate form in Propulsid. Its chemical name is (Ā±) – cis – 4 – amino – 5 – chloro – N – [1 – [3 – (4 – fluorophenoxy)propyl] – 3 – methoxy – 4 – piperidinyl] – 2 – methoxybenzamide monohydrate. Its molecular weight is 483.97, an odorless powder, and white to slightly beige in color. It is insoluble in water and sparingly soluble in methanol, and soluble in acetone. The tablet contains colloidal silicon dioxide, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, polysorbate 20, povidone, and starch (corn) as inactive ingredients. Whereas are hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, methylparaben, microcrystalline cellulose and carboxymethylcellulose sodium, polysorbate 20, propylparaben, sodium chloride, sorbitol, and water are inactive ingredients in the suspension.

Uses of Propulsid

Propulsid or Cisapride is used for treatment of heartburn, which occurs due to gastric reflux. It regulates the acid level in esophagus. CisaprideĀ  increases the rate of digestion. It also increases bowel movements and strengthens the muscle between stomach and esophagus.

Doctors prescribe it for purposes not listed in medical guide too based on their clinical judgment.

Use of this medicine has been restricted to U.S. market only. It is due to safety concerns.

Precautions before taking Propulsid

  • Avoid taking this drug if you have any heart or related disease.
  • Consult your doctor before taking Propulsid if you are using any kind of medication.
  • Avoid alcohol or use it with caution while using Propulsid as it can increase drowsiness or dizziness already occurring due to use of this drug.
  • If you are using Propulsid, consult your doctor before using any other medication.
  • Avoid using grapefruit or grapefruit juice while on Propulsid as it can increase amount of cisapride in your body resulting into harmful side effects.
  • Avoid Propulsid if you have severe dehydration.
  • Avoid this drug if you have malnutrition or any eating disorder.
  • Avoid this medicine, if you are suffering from kidney failure or any type of kidney problem.
  • Do not take this drug if you are suffering from any severe lung problems.
  • Do not use Propusid if you have advanced cancer. Immediately call your doctor if you experience any bleeding or obstruction in your stomach; while using this drug.
  • Consult your doctor before taking this drug if you have suffered or suffering from congestive heart failure, hardening of the arteries, slow heart rate or a heart rhythm disorder or heart block.
  • Consult your doctor before using Propulsid if you have a personal or family history of Long QT syndrome.
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to have a baby or breast-feeding before being prescribed with Propulsid.
