We all need to eat for existence of our lives. People tend to eat more, when they like some food item. It’s quite natural, but when overeating becomes compulsive, it can pose many threats to health.

Eating more while one get his or her favorite food cannot be termed as addiction or eating disorder. Overeating or binge eating disorder is such a disorder, when people tend to eat a large amount of food regularly. The symptoms of binge eating could be easily identified such as eating quickly and a lot on regular basis, eating while engaged in other works or not stopping even after getting full. People with overeating disorder eat alone due to embarrassment and feel disgusted, depressed, ashamed, angry, or guilty after eating. They are prone to excessive weight gain.

Binge eating disorder or BED has a predictable patterns. Person suffering may have one or more binge cycles repetitively back and forth or may never restrict. A person suffering is not able to control himself from eating large amounts of food in short span of time. They mindlessly eat and the eating feels out of control.  To understand the binge eating, it is necessary to understand the reasons of binge eating.

Reasons of Binge or Overeating

Overeating is an addiction, but it cannot be ranked equally as alcoholism or drug addiction as one needs food to be alive. Overeating is such an addiction, which is caused due to an excessiveness of a necessity. There are many reasons guiding the pattern and extent of binge or overeating. Some people overeat due to a fondness for food. They overeat, when they get their favorite food. Other reason is that they do it just out of a habit. Some overeat due to lack of willpower to stop eating when they are full.

Mostly overeating addiction is related to emotional discomfort or stress. People tend to eat to comfort themselves with food, to get rid of their emotional discomfort and distress. Stress also leads to binge eating as a measure of solace.

Powerful negative beliefs about body image are found in sufferers of binge and compulsive overeating problems. They do also worry about weight gain and loose self-esteem. They try to compensate by dieting, starving, taking slimming pills and other measures. It results in further food craving and repeated episodes of overeating. Overeats eat to satiate their emotional hunger, sometime even to avoid a situation or to propel a thought out of their mind.

Some people may overeat due to biological reasons. If the hypothalamus, the part of the brain that controls appetite, fails to send proper messages related to hunger and fullness, people tend to overeat.

Harmful Effects Of Overeating

Overeating could cause serious health problems too. People with overeating problem tend to gain excessive weight. It may lead to obesity. There are many health problems, which could arise due to obesity. Obese people are more prone to diseases like diabetes, thyroid, heart problems, high blood pressure and many more such diseases. They may also suffer from emotional distress and other psychological complications, as they feel bad about themselves and their body. They loose their self-esteem as they feel they have lack of self-control. It could lead to depression or extreme measures of reducing weight such as starving to falling pray of extreme ways of dieting.

Overeaters could also develop Bulimia. It is an eating disorder, in which the sufferer eats much food, feeling out of control while eating. It later leaves them feeling bad and low and they adopt starving, dieting, slimming pills or other measures. These increases food craving and hunger pangs and repeated episode of binge eating, making situation even worse.

Getting Rid of Overeating

They need proper help to get rid of this addiction. A nutrition specialists or dietitians can help them to promote healthy eating behaviors in them. He can suggest nutritional needs, portion sizes, metabolism, and exercises to control this problem. It is tougher to get rid of this addiction as sufferers cannot do away with food, but have to control themselves while having it.

Some patients may even need psychologists and other therapists to handle their emotions, thoughts, stress, and other things with healthier method than eating. It depends on the reason and nature of overeating that what measures are used for treatment. Doctors may prescribe medications also along with different therapies and nutrition advice.
