The news could be unsettling for Bayer Corporation as a lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court; Southern District of Illinois (East St. Louis) accuses the pharmaceutical giant of concealing research data detailing the side effects in the interest of making more profits. With this Yaz-Yasmin lawsuit, the multi district litigation court of Yaz lawsuits formed to resolve litigation pertaining to the drug has added another case to scrutinize.

The lawsuit was filed on September 18, 2012 and the plaintiff in the case is recorded as Claudia Brown, a resident of North Carolina. The case is being overseen by the multi district litigation court Chief Judge David R. Herndon. In the lawsuit Brown and her Yaz lawyer had framed the charges of negligence and concealing of relevant data accusing the drug manufactured by the company has left her with severe physical injuries and needed her to remove her gall bladder.

Some other charges by the plaintiff and her injury lawyer involves failing to warn about the potential side effects of the drug. The plaintiff has also accused that to get marketing and financial mileage the company has marketed their brand aggressively and excessively. The plaintiff and her lawyer have also furnished figures and facts detailing how the sales number of the drug have gone up to $616 million in the fiscal year of 2008 from a total sale of $262 million in the year of 2007.

Yaz and Yasmin are two of the widely used birth control pills prescribed across the United States for women who wish to avoid pregnancy. These two drugs were found to be very effective compared to other available drugs in the market. These two drugs are characterized by the presence of special and unique progestin hormone known as drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol. When taken as per the direction of the physician it can diminish the chances of pregnancy up to 99 percent.

Despite being effective various studies came into light that links both of these drugs to various side effects like gall bladder diseases, deep vein thrombosis, strokes and pulmonary embolism.

Various studies and reports have confirmed that long-term use of Yaz-Yasmin birth control pill could lead to many physical complications accompanying medical costs and deterioration of quality of the life-style. According to various reports women who are over 35, having high cholesterol level and have a smoking habit are more prone to Yaz-Yasmin side effects.

The rate and degree of complications could increase multi-fold should users consume potassium retention drugs along with these drugs. Various experts and medical professionals have opined that important ingredient of these drugs  drospirenone and ethinyl estradil could readily interact with potassium retention drugs and leads to increased risk of blood clots creation of embolism and thrombosis in the blood.

Some of the common potassium retention drugs that readily interact with yaz-yasmin are:

  • Tranquilizers, barbiturates and other sleep inducing pills
  • Anastrozole
  • Antibotics like rifampin, rifabutin, griseofulvin, and rifapentine
  • Cyclosporine
  • Caffeine
  • Clofibrate
