Multaq is a drug prescribed for the treatment of cardiac arrhythmia. It is manufactured by Sanofi-Aventis, a Paris based pharmaceutical company. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Multaq tablets to help maintain normal heart rhythms in patients, who have a history heart rhythm disorders such as atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter. It contains dronedarone as main active ingredient. Clinical trials have shown that Multaq reduced cardiovascular hospitalization or death by 24 percent. It has shown positive result especially in patients having history of atrial fibrillation. Heart rhythm disorders such as atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter could prevent pumping of blood out of the heart. Though FDA asked for a boxed warning asking patients to not use this drug in severe heart failure patients.

Uses Of Multaq

It is used for normalization of heartbeats in patients of atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter. It is administered to reduce need of hospitalization in such patients.

It also helps to reduce risk of uneven heartbeats and hospitalization in patients of diabetes , high blood pressure or patients having a history of stroke. It is also helpful in keeping heartbeats normal in patients above 70 years.

Doctors also prescribe it for uses not listed in its medication guide based on clinical judgment.

Precautions Before Using Multaq

Patients should take care of following things before using Multaq –

  • If a patient is allergic to dronedarone or any other ingredient of Multaq, he or she should not use this drug.
  • Patients having any type of severe liver diseases should not use this drug.
  • If a patient has suffered heart failure, it is advisable not to use this drug.
  • Patients having AV block or sick sinus syndrome should not use this medicine.
  • Patients, who have suffered fainting due to a history of slow heartbeats, should also avoid taking this drug.
  • Patients, who are pregnant or breast-feeding, should not use this medicine as it could cause birth defects or harm the new born.
  • If a patient is using any other drug, he or she should consult the doctor before using Multaq as it can interact with certain drugs and could cause fatal side effects.
  • Patients using Multaq should consult their doctor before using any other medicine to avoid any fatal side effects due to drug interaction.
  • If a patient is using Multaq, a mean of contraception should be used to avoid pregnancy as this drug could harm the unborn child.
  • A patient should immediately call doctor if she gets pregnant while using Multaq.
  • A patient should consult his or her medical history with doctor before going for Multaq as this drug should not be used in certain medical conditions.
  • Low levels of potassium or magnesium in the blood is another condition, which should be told to the doctor as it could increase risk of QT prolongation in patients. In such cases use of Multaq or dronedarone might be harmful.
  • Patients should consult their doctor before using Multaq, if they have any condition such as severe sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting.
  • dronedarone, the active ingredient in Multaq may affect the heart rhythm (QT prolongation). Thus it is advisable to consult the doctor if a patient has suffered from (heart failure, slow heartbeat, and QT prolongation in the EKG or a family history of these conditions.
  • Patients should consult their doctor before going for any type of surgery, if they are using Multaq.
  • Patients should go under regular monitoring of blood and heart rhythm, while using this drug.
  • If a patient has taken overdose of Multaq, it is advisable to seek emergency medical help, as it could be fatal. Overdose symptoms might be weakness, slow heart rate, light-headedness or fainting.
  • Patients should stick to the prescribed dosages as an overdose could yield fatal results.
  • Patients should avoid using grapefruit and grapefruit juice, while using Multaq or dronedarone.
