Motrin, ibuprofen, belongs to a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) class of medication. Manufactured by McNeil Consumer Healthcare, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, Motrin is an over-the-counter tablet or liquid primarily used as a painkiller to relieve fever, swelling, and tenderness and stiffness caused by osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Motrin brands include Motrin IB, Motrin PM, Children’s Motrin, Children’s Motrin Cold, Junior Strength Motrin, Infants’ Motrin. These products, however, have been subjected to public criticism for causing because of side effects users have experienced. Some of these side effects are mild, like nausea, diarrhea and headaches; yet, some are severe and life-threatening, including cardiovascular problems, skin allergies and reactions, ulceration, and renal problems.
Stevens Johnson Syndrome and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis
Ibuprofen, the active ingredient in Motrin, and other NSAIDs have been linked to Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN). SJS and TEN, a severe allergic reaction that result in skin and mucous membrane lesions, begins with flu-like symptoms. Then, a painful rash spreads across the body and mucosal surfaces, such as the eyes, lips, esophagus, upper respiratory tract, genital area, and gastrointestinal tract. Patients have difficulty eating, walking, and breathing. Eventually the top layer of skin dies and sheds. While SJS is classified as having affected less than 10% of body surface area, TEN, a more wide-spread and devastating form, affects more than 30% of body surface area. These painful and incapacitating disorders can take months, if not years, to recover from and sometimes leads to death. Dr. Alan Lyell, one of the first to diagnose SJS/TEN in 1956, described it as “an eruption resembling scalding of the skin.”
Have You Been Affected by Motrin?
Numerous lawsuits have been brought against McNeil. In 2011, a jury in Philadelphia ordered the manufacturer to pay the Donaldson family, whose young daughter was severely disfigured and disabled by SJS/TEN, for “failing to adequately warn consumers about the toxic skin reactions” on their labels.
Any individual or the relative of an individual who has suffered due to Motrin’s side effects is permitted to file a lawsuit. You may be eligible to seek reimbursement for medical expenses, compensation for pain and suffering, and punitive damages (compensation granted for losses suffered).
Different states have different legislation regarding medical lawsuits, so it is essential to hire an experienced and effective lawyer who can file the case.
