McNeil Consumer Healthcare, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, manufactures analgesics and pain killers under the brand name Motrin. Motrin is basically ibuprofen, an anti-inflammatory drug that is primarily used as a pain killer. Motrin brands include Motrin IB, Motrin PM, Children’s Motrin, Children’s Motrin Cold, Junior Strength Motrin, Infants’ Motrin. However, since 2008, Motrin has been subjected to public criticism for causing some sever side effects due to defective drugs.

The side effects of Motrin can be mild like nausea, diarrhea and headaches to or severe like cardiovascular problems, severe skin allergies and reactions, ulceration and renal problems.

Increasing number of lawsuits and FDA warning forced the company to recall certain drugs. There are many reports about the company trying to mislead people by hiring people to buy all the drugs on the shelves so as to avert the recall.

Composition

Motrin has ibuprofen as main active ingredient. It is responsible for reducing the level of hormone, responsible for pain and inflammation. Its chemical name is (±) – 2 – (p – isobutylphenyl) propionic acid.

It is white powder with crystalline nature. It is easily soluble in ethanol and acetone and slightly soluble in water. Motrin (ibuprofen) comes in 400 mg, 600 mg, and 800 mg tablets. It contains carnauba wax, colloidal silicon dioxide, croscarmellose sodium, hypromellose, lactose, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, propylene glycol and titanium dioxide as inactive ingredients. .

Uses of Motrin

Motrin is used for treatment of different types of pain. It treats normal pains such as headache, toothache, back pain, muscle pain etc.

It is also used for treatment of joint pains occurring due to arthritis. Its other use is for treatment of menstrual cramps.

It is also used to treat fever, common cold and flu and pains occurring due to them.

It belongs to a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) group of drugs. It blocks and reduces the level of hormone responsible for pain and inflammation. Use of Motrin helps to reduce pain, swelling, fever or inflammation.

Precautions before using Motrin

One should take many precautions before using this drug to avoid any severe side effect or adverse medical condition.

  • Use of this drug could cause heart or circulation problems, if used for long term. Avoid using this drug right before or after heart bypass surgery (CABG).
  • Avoid use of Motrin if you are allergic to ibuprofen, aspirin or other NSAIDs.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a history of heart attack, stroke or blood clot before using Motrin.
  • If you are suffering from heart disease, congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, consult your doctor before using Motrin.
  • Consult your doctor before using this drug, if you have a history of stomach bleeding or ulcers.
  • Before taking this drug, consult your doctor, if you have asthma.
  • If you are suffering from polyps in nose, tell your doctor before using Motrin.
  • If you are suffering from any bleeding or clotting disorder, it is advisable to consult your doctor before using this drug.
  • Tell your doctor, if you have any liver disease.
  • Tell your doctor, if you are suffering from any kidney disease.
  • Do not smoke, while using Motrin.
  • Tell your doctor if you are suffering from systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), before going for this drug.
  • Do not use Motrin, if you are pregnant or planning to be pregnant as it may harm the unborn child.
  • Do not use this drug, if you are breast-feeding as it may pass into the breast milk and harm the child.
  • Avoid an overdose of Motrin as it could damage stomach or intestines. Stick to the recommended dosages.
  • It could cause perforation bleeding from intestine or stomach. If you experience any of these while using Motrin, immediately consult your doctor.
  • If you develop chest pain, weakness, shortness of breath, speech alteration or change in vision or balance, while using Motrin call your doctor immediately.
  • Its advisable to seek medical help if you have black, bloody, or tarry stools, or coughing up blood or dark vomit as they could be symptoms of serious abdominal problems.
  • If you develop pain in chest, jaw, left arm or shortness of breath, unusual sweating, confusion, weakness on one side of the body, while using Motrin, call your doctor.
