Montelukast Sodium is used in anti asthmatic drug. Montelukast Sodium belongs to the leukotriene receptor antagonist group of drugs. It inhibits the cysteinyl leukotriene CysLT1 receptor. It is white to off-white powder. It is easily soluble in ethanol, methanol, and water. Our body releases Leukotrienes, when any allergen such as pollen enters our body through breath. These allergens could cause swelling in lungs and could tighten muscles breathing track and could lead to asthma symptoms.

Montelukast is used for prevention of asthma attacks in adults and children above 1 year. Doctors also prescribe it for treatment of runny nose and sneezing occurring due to allergies. It is also used for exercise-induced bronchoconstriction. This medicine should be given to children only on prescribed by a certified medical practitioner. Singulair or Montelukast Sodium comes in 4mg, 5mg and 10mg tablets.

It is advisable to a patient to tell his doctor about any type of allergy, his medical history or any medicine being taken before starting Montelukast. This medicine should not be used by patients suffering from liver diseases. Patients of phenylketonuria or any similar condition should not use this medicine. If asthma attack has already started, it is advisable to not use this medicine. If a patient is already taking this drug for prevention of asthma or allergy symptoms, it should not be use for exercise-induced bronchoconstriction. It should not be by pregnant and nursing mothers. Patients, who are planning to conceive, should also avoid this medicine. It could harm the unborn baby or infant.

Though it is used to prevent asthma attack, it could worsen asthma or allergies. Some patients could also experience depression, hallucinations, liver damage, swelling or allergic reactions. This drug is linked with many side effects such as mood swings, agitation, aggression, anxiety, sleeplessness, sleepwalking, numbness or chronic pain in the arms or legs and muscle weakness.

It could also cause serious allergic reaction such as rash, itching or swelling in the face, tongue or throat, severe dizziness or breathlessness. It could also cause gastrointestinal problems in some patients. One of the most serious side effects of this drug is upsurge of suicidal thoughts. Patients may have thoughts of harming himself or committing suicide.
