A plaintiff from Minnesota has sued J&J for sustaining injuries due to Levaquin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic widely used across the region of United States to treat infections like Bronchitis and Sinusitis. According to the report, the lawsuit was filed by Albert Miller on September 14, 2012 in the U.S. District Court, District of Minnesota. However, the judge has sent the case to the MDL to streamline the judicial process and consolidate the case.

The FDA approved the drug in 1997 and since then it has been criticized by medical professionals and patients for its toxicity to body’s tendon fibers. Some patients have reported of tendonitis while some have complained of tendon rupture. According to experts both of these events require extensive and time-consuming treatments. The plaintiff and its legal representative have framed the charges of fraud, negligence, breach of warranties and deceptive trade practices.

What is Levaquin

Levaquin is a fluroquinolones indicated for the treatment of bacterial infection in various parts of the body including skin, kidneys, bladder, sinuses or prostate. Apart from aforementioned conditions it is also used to treat bacterial infections that cause pneumonia or bronchitis. The drug has also been found effective in treating people who have been exposed to anthrax or plague.

Precautions to be taken while taking Levaquin

  • People who are allergic to medicines like levofloxacin and other antibiotics should avoid using this medicine
  • Patients need to tell their physician if they are suffering from conditions like liver or kidney diseases, breathing trouble, seizures, joint-problems or brain tumor as some of the chemical compositions of the drugs used for treating them may interact with Levaquin and can cause adverse reactions
  • Patients need to avoid taking antacids, chewable tablets, mineral or vitamin supplements just before or after consuming Levaquin

To ensure safety and precaution tell your physician if you have any of the below mentioned conditions

  1. Myasthenia Gravis
  2. Liver or Kidney disease
  3. Epilepsy or Seizures
  4. A history of brain tumor and head injury
  5. Long QT syndrome.
  6. Diabetes
  7. Hypokalemia or low levels of potassium in the blood

Side effects of Levaquin:

Levaquin too is not devoid of side effects and some of the important side effects of Levaquin include:

  • Fainting, dizziness or fast heartbeats
  • Loss of movements in joints or other bones of the body
  • Bloody or watery diarrhea
  • Depression, hallucinations, anxiety or insomnia
  • Pain or numbness in the various parts of feet and hands

Other drugs that could interact with Levaquin and cause harm to body

  • Anti-coagulant or Blood thinner like Coumadin, Jantoven, Warfarin etc
  • Medicines that are used to treat disease like Insulin
  • Antibiotics like erythromycin, clarithromycin, Avelox or pentamidine
  • Anti-malaria medicines like Mefloquine (Lariam) or Chloroquine (Aralen)
  • Medicines that are used to treat conditions like vomiting and nausea like Dolasetron (Anzemet) or Ondansetron (Zofran)
