A new lawsuit was filed in Massachusetts District Court that alleged Fresenius Medical Care of negligence for its dialysis concentrates and NaturaLyte. The lawsuit was filed by two different plaintiffs on December 12, 2012 who lost their loved ones after using the concentrates.

According to reports from various sources currently there are 11 GranuFlo lawsuits that are yet to be heard and tried in eight different districts of the United States. In the lawsuit filed by plaintiffs and their lawyers it states that the company has deliberately concealed the relevant information pertaining to these dialysis concentrates and that if revealed it could have saved plenty of lives claimed by these concentrates.

In an attempt to support their claims, plaintiffs produced various documents that revealed that in the year 2011, the company sent internal memo to medical practitioners and doctors who were working in the dialysis centers that belonged to its own network. While describing the internal memo, the plaintiff argued that the internal memo sent by the company to its doctors warned them of the possible side effects associated with these concentrates. The memo also revealed that 941 patients had died of GranuFlo heart attack at Fresenius clinics in the year 2010 alone and that adequate measures ought to be taken while using these concentrates.

However, despite its awareness of the dangers associated with the concentrates, the manufacturer failed to warn patients and medical professionals about the possible side effects and threats that dialysis concentrates carry. With the lawsuit the plaintiffs have brought in a number of counts against the manufacturer including, negligence, product liability and concealment of relevant information. With the lawsuit plaintiffs seeks for compensatory, punitive and exemplary damages.

NaturaLyte and GranuFlo are concentrates used during hemodialysis to prevent acid buildup. NaturaLyte is the liquid form of the concentrate while GranuFlo is the powder form.

Dialysis is done when human kidney loses its capacity to purify blood thereby altering the pH of the blood. Dialysis is widely used to revert and undo the chemical alteration that the blood has undergone due to the accumulation of toxic wastes.

In fact dialysis neutralizes acid in the blood by elevating the concentration of bicarbonates in the blood, however, too much bicarbonate from the combination of prescribed bicarbonate and that produced by GranuFlo could result in metabolic alkalosis. Metabolic alkalosis can cause numerous fatal side effects including heart attack, and cardiopulmonary arrest.
