Levoxyl is a thyroid-stimulating drug. It contains Levothyroxine as main active ingredient. It is a synthetic and crystalline tetraiodothyronine sodium salt. It is an alternative of thyroxin hormone produced by thyroid gland in human body for regulation of body’s energy and metabolism. It is used to treat the condition when thyroid gland is not producing enough hormones. This condition is known as hypothyroidism.

It is also used for treatment or prevention of enlarged thyroid glands or goiter, which occurs due to lack of iodine, hormone imbalance, surgery, cancer or any type of radiation therapy. Though it controls obesity in patients who are suffering the problem due to hypothyroidism, as it controls this disease, but it is not meant for weight loss or obesity control.

Patients should always discuss their allergies, medical history and medicines already in use with their doctor before using this drug. It could worsen certain medical conditions or produce side effects by interacting to certain drugs. Patients who already are suffering from increased thyroid hormones (thyrotoxicosis), decreased adrenal gland function, heart disease such as coronary artery disease or irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure and diabetes should avoid use of this drug. .

It is said to safe for pregnant patients and nursing mothers as yet. It is not known to harm the child, but even then it is advisable to consult the doctor before using this medicine in such conditions. It takes time to human body to start responding to this medicine. Patients should not stop taking this medicine without consulting their doctor. It may be needed to have this medicine for whole life.

Use of Levoxyl could produce allergic reactions such as hives, breathlessness, swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat. Some patients may experience headache, insomnia, nervousness, irritable feeling, fever, hot flashes, sweating, menstrual period changes, or change in appetite or weight. Some patients may suffer from tiredness, diarrhea, shaking or tremor and hair loss.

It is said to worsen the condition of the patient, if taken by a heart patient. Some patients may experience chest pain, fast, pounding or irregular heartbeat, swelling of hands, ankles or feet or seizures. It could cause breathing problems such as shortness of breath or irregular breathing in some patients. Few patients could also suffer from migraine as a side effect of this drug.
