Levofloxacin, sold with brand names as Levaquin and Tavanic is an antibiotic to treat severe bacterial infections. It belongs to class of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones. It is used to treat many infections caused by bacteria that are not treated by any other drug but its side effects are so severe that it can cause death.

It is linked with numerous serious and life-threatening harmful reactions. It can cause hepatoxicity, irreversible peripheral neuropathy and swelling of the tendon (tendinitis) in all ages or ruptured tendons spontaneously. If you are over 60 years of age, have kidney, heart or lung transplant or if you are taking steroids then the risk of tendon rupture increases.

It results in lifelong irreversible disability as its adverse effects manifest long after you take therapy. Sometimes your tendon can rupture while you are on Levaquin or have just finished the therapy. Its interactions with various herbal and natural supplements result in the creation of non-absorbable complexes, increase in toxicity and increase the risk of cardiotoxity, anticoagulation, and arrhythmias.

Levaquin can cause liver damage. If you have health problems, like nausea or vomiting, fever, loss of appetite, itching, weakness, stomach pain, abdominal pain or tenderness, abnormal or inexplicable tiredness, yellow skin, light colored bowel movements or dark colored urine, Levaquin might be the reason. It affects central nervous system even after just the first dose. You can experience seizures, depression, confusion, nightmares, anxiety, trouble sleeping, hallucinations and mood swings.

Levaquin can cause serious allergic reactions. Symptoms are skin rash, swelling of the lips, tongue or face, hives, rapid heartbeat, trouble breathing or swallowing, and throat tightness. It can damage the nerves of arms, legs and hands. Pain, burning, numbness, tingling, or weakness in the limbs is some of the symptoms.

After or up to two months of using the drug diarrhea, bloody stools or an intestinal infection known as pseudomembranous colitis can occur. Levaquin can interfere in your heart rhythms as it can cause serious changes in it. Fast or irregular heartbeat, incessant fainting are some of the characteristics.

Monitor your blood sugar level if you are taking levaquin. It can make changes in your blood sugar level i.e. blood sugar level can increase or decrease. Diarrhea, constipation, nausea, headache, dizziness are some of the most common side effects, nonetheless it is not a complete list.

Levaquin can make your skin venerable to sun. Avoid basking in the sun. On sun exposure you may get sunburn, severe blisters or swelling. Also avoid operation of machinery like driving or any activity that requires mental alertness because Levaquin might make you feel dizzy.

If you are allergic to any of the ingredients in Levaquin or Levaquin itself or other fluoroquinolone antibiotics, stop its usage.
