One more lawsuit related to Stevens-Johnson Syndrome and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis due to side effect of children’s Motrin was filed against McNeil Consumer Healthcare, a subsidiary of Johnson and Johnson. The case was filed by parents of Sabrina Brierton Johnson of Los Angeles.

The parents of the 7-year-old girl filed a lawsuit against manufacturer of Children’s Motrin. The lawsuit claimed that the girl lost her eyesight and undergone suffering due to several severe side effects of Children’s Motrin. Kenneth and Joan Brierton Johnson, parents of the girl accused that due to negligence of the pharmaceutical company their daughter suffered from severe skin diseases. They charged McNeil of breach of warranty and of hiding the potential health risks of Children’s Motrin from consumers and doctors. Sabrina was administered with the Motrin on 8th September 2003 for treatment of fever. She had no allergy prior to the use of this medicine. After using this medicine she developed a pink coloration in her eyes and sores in her mouth the very next day. She has to be hospitalized and she lost eyesight of both eyes.

Her doctor diagnosed her with Stevens-Johnson Syndrome and attributed her condition to use of Motrin. She had to undergo multiple eye surgeries. Motrin has been linked to Stevens-Johnson Syndrome and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis, which are severe skin conditions.

Parents of Sabrina demanded for unspecified compensatory and punitive damages. They held Pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson, subsidiary McNeil Consumer & Specialty Pharmaceuticals, and several other firms, for their daughter’s condition.

Children’s Motrin has been linked to Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS), and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis, which are life threatening allergic reaction from Ibuprofen. It is the main ingredient of Motrin. Stevens Johnson Syndrome normally starts with fever, sore throat, rash and headaches. But its symptoms worsen quickly and there could be skin lesions and blisters, as well as bleeding on lips, eyes, mouth and nasal route. This disease could cause inflammation of the mucous membranes inside the mouth, eyes, throat, genital region and intestinal region. Some patients may even develop mouth ulcer. If the condition worsens, the patient could develop Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN). It makes them patients more prone to infections. It could even result in the death of the patient.

Some patients may have to suffer permanent blindness, aversion to light, asthma and lung damage. To treat their condition patients may have to undergo many surgeries. These allergies could cause a patient to suffer for the lifetime.
