Hydroxycut and Its Side Effects
Hydroxycut, a series of dietary supplements marketed as fat burners, as energy-enhancers, and for weight loss, is marked by Iovate Health Sciences and manufactured by Muscletech. Sold in grocery stores, health food stores, pharmacies, and online as pills, drinks, and powders throughout the United States, over 9 million units of Hydroxycut products were purchased by consumers from its introduction to the market in 1995 until 2009.
The following products are sold under the Hydroxycut brand:

- Hydroxycut Caffeine-Free Rapid Release Caplets

- Hydroxycut Max Liquid Caplets
- Hydroxycut Regular Drink Packets
- Hydroxycut Caffeine-Free Drink Packets
- Hydroxycut Hardcore Drink Packets (Ignition Stix)

While Muscletech claims Hydroxycut is the outcome of “over 10 years of research” and that, in conjunction with diet and exercise, users of Hydroxycut products will lose 7.9% more body fat after eight weeks of use then individuals not using the product, according to a New York Times article dated May 2003, documents from Muscletech used in a federal lawsuit showed how “studies would be massaged for advertising copy.” When internal studies proved no statistically significant differences in weight loss between Hydroxycut users and those taking a placebo, even a Muscletech insider asserted, “Hydroxycut can’t be claimed as superior.” Yet, advertisements continued to claim greater weight loss occurred with the use of Hydroxycut. In addition, it was found that the company hid evidence of cardiac side effects and tampered with evidence. Because dietary supplements are not regulated by the FDA, negative or unsatisfactory results are often buried—resulting in serious and often life-threatening side effects.
Liver Damage and Rhabdomyolysis
Countless users of Hydroxycut brand products have complained of irregular heartbeat, chest pain, dizziness, headache, and nausea, but the most severe side effects of Hydroxycut are liver damage and rhabdomyolysis. In 2002, the Health Hazard Evaluation Board (HHE), part of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), issued a report concluding “that the dietary supplement, Hydroxycut, presents a severe potentially life-threatening hazard to some users.” The HHE reports that the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition’s (CFSAN) adverse monitoring system began receiving reports of liver-related illnesses in people consuming Hydroxycut, after both short and long term use and in varied amounts. Initially it was assumed that ephedra was the source of the problem; so, beginning in 2004, Hydroxycut was reformulated and became ephedra-free. However, even after the formula change, liver-related problems were still reported.
On May 1, 2009, the FDA issued a warning to consumers to stop Hydroxycut-use after twenty-three serious health problems and one death was reported. These individuals had no history of liver disease or risk factors for liver disease, and, often after consumption was ceased, the resolution of liver problems occurred.
In addition to liver problems, the use of Hydroxycut has been linked to rhabdomyolysis. Rhabdomyolysis is a condition that occurs when damaged skeletal muscle tissue breaks down and are released into the blood stream. If undiagnosed, rhabdomyoysis can lead to kidney failure.
