Horizant is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline. It was approved by U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of moderate-to-severe primary Restless Legs Syndrome in adults. It is the first medicine in its class, which was approved for treatment of moderate-to-severe primary Restless Legs Syndrome. It should not be used in people who need to sleep during the daytime and stay awake at night. Its effectiveness was tested in a 12-week clinical trial in adults. It should not be used as an alternative to gabapentin medicines. It contains gabapentin enacarbil as its main active ingredient.

Patients should stick to the dosages recommended by the healthcare practitioner. It should not be cut, crushed or chewed. It should be taken as a whole tablet. Its overdose could be fatal. In case of overdose patients should immediately call the doctor. Medicines, which cause dizziness or drowsiness, should not be taken while using Horizant. It could worsen the condition. Other Gabapentin drugs such as Neurontin or Gralise, should be avoided while using Horizant

Patients should tell doctor about their medical history, especially kidney problems or are on hemodialysis, depression, mood problems, or suicidal thoughts or behavior. It could worsen certain medical conditions including all these problems. Patients should also tell the doctor about any medicine being used including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements as it could interact with certain medicines and produce harmful effects.

It causes sleepiness and drowsiness, thus patients should avoid driving, operating machinery or other activities needing alertness and care as it could be dangerous. Use of Horizant may cause suicidal thoughts or actions in some patients. In such conditions, it is advisable to immediately seek medical help. Patients should seek medical help if any alarming side effect such as thoughts about suicide or dying, attempt to commit suicide, new or worse depression, new or worse anxiety, agitation, restlessness, panic attacks, sleeping problems, irritability, aggressiveness, violence, hyper activity or behavioral changes occur.

Patients who are pregnant or expecting mothers or nursing mothers who are breast-feeding should not use this medicine as it could harm the unborn or newborn baby. Use of Horizant should not be stopped suddenly, without asking a doctor.
