According to the latest news from the FDA, Hayward, CA, based Haig’s Delicacies has issued a nationwide voluntary recall of its of Tzatziki, Falafel, Spanakopita and Tyropita due to Undeclared Allergens. The recall of the product was initiated by the company after it was found that the product labels do not include Allergy Statements reflecting the use of the following food allergens:

  • Tzatziki is being recalled because of the undeclared use of a food allergen (milk)
  • Spanakopita and Tyropita are being recalled because of the undeclared use of food allergens (wheat, milk and eggs).
  • Falafel is being recalled because of the undeclared use of a food allergen (wheat).

According to the latest update, the manufacturer of the product has immediately segregated its entire inventory and is notifying customers and consumers not to consume this product if they are sensitive or allergic to any of these products. The company has already addressed this issue by updating all labels to include the Allergen Statements.

With this recall the company has asked people to avoid using these products if they are allergic to milk, wheat and eggs. If these products are consumed they may run the risk of life threatening allergic reaction and anaphylaxis that require immediate hospitalization and medical care.

What the recalled products are:

  • Falafels are fried garbanzo bean balls which are packaged in 5 oz retail rectangular deli containers and 5 lb bulk food service cases.
  • Tzatziki is a Greek Yogurt, cucumber and dill dip/spread which is packaged in 8 oz retail round deli containers and 5 lb bulk food service cases.
  • Tyropita is a triangular phyllo dough pastry with a cheese filling which is packaged only in bulk food service cases.
  • Spanakopita is a triangular phyllo dough pastry with a spinach and cheese filling which is packaged only in bulk food service cases.

What is Food Allergy?

Food allergy can be defined as an adverse reaction to food that is initiated and mediated by the body’s immune system.
