Ginger is a popular herb and health supplement. The underground stem of the plant is used for medicinal purposes. It is widely used in recipes or even as a paste for medicinal benefits. Ginger can be cooked or eaten raw for various health benefits.

Recommended Dietary Allowance of Ginger

  • If you are being treated for motion sickness or morning sickness then 250 mg of Ginger daily is the recommended value.
  • In order to reduce nausea and vomiting post surgical procedures, 1 – 2 grams of powdered Ginger is enough.
  • For arthritic patients it largely depends on the extent of the problem and age of the patient. In most cases Ginger is administered with food along with other pain relieving medication.

  • Although Ginger is considered safe for use across all age groups, constant use may lead to mild discomfort.
  • Patients may suffer from heartburn or diarrhoea and in some cases severe stomach infections with constant use. That is primarily because Ginger heats the body.
  • Ginger can be used to treat open wounds but too much use may cause skin rashes.
  • It is not advisable to consume Ginger during pregnancy.
  • Patients with heart conditions should avoid Ginger until it is had under strict supervision.
  • Diabetic people should avoid Ginger in their foods. That is because Ginger may decrease blood sugar levels causing harm to diabetic patients when they are on other blood sugar medication.
  • Pregnant women or nursing mothers should avoid taking Ginger unless advised to have it under special conditions to prevent severe morning sickness.
  • If you have a blood disorder then it is safer to avoid Ginger.
  • Patients with heart problems should avoid taking Ginger because it leads to other complications.
