Fen-Phen is a weight loss pill. It is a combination drug containing fenfluramine and phentermine. Fenfluramine is nearly similar to other anti obesity drug dexfenfluramine, sold with name Redux. Whereas Phentermine was also sold with many brand names including Phentrol for treatment of obesity. The combination was launched in the market as a miracle drug to reduce obesity. It was withdrawn from U.S. market in 1997 due to its alleged link with heart valve diseases.

Severe Side Effects of Fen-Phen

Fenfluramine and Phentermine both the drugs have been linked to severe side effects. Combination of these drugs could produce lethal side effects. Safety of this combination of these drugs have not been proved, thus it a risk to take this drug without any medical prescription. This drug could yield following serious side effects.

  • Fenfluramine and Phentermine both the drugs have been linked to valvular heart diseases. Thus a combination of both these drugs could cause heart diseases such as valvular heart disease, Primary Pulmonary Hypertension and neuropsychological complications.
  • Fenfluramine has been linked to Primary Pulmonary Hypertension (PPH). Use of Fen-Phen could lead to PPH.
  • Phentermine is linked with heart valve damage. Use of Fen-Phen could also lead to Heart valve damage.
  • Use of Fen-Phen could cause neuropsychological complications.
  • Some patients may experience dyspnea or trouble in breathing.
  • Use of this drug could lead to persistent dizziness.
  • Patients may develop persistent fatigue or weakness.
  • Its use could result into fainting spells.
