Dostinex: Medifacts and Uses
Dostinex is the brand name for cabergoline. It belongs to dopamine receptor antagonists group of drugs. It is used for treatment of hormone imbalance, when this condition creates too much prolactin in blood. The prolactin hormone is released from pituitary gland. Dostinex reduces the amount of prolactin hormone in the blood.
Dostinex tablet has cabergoline as main ingredient. It belongs to dopamine receptor agonist group of drugs. The chemical name of cabergoline is 1-[(6-allylergolin-8ß-yl)-carbonyl]-1-[3-(dimethylamino) propyl]-3-ethylurea. It has empirical formula C26H37N5O2. Its molecular weight is 451.62. Cabergoline is a white powder, which is soluble in ethyl alcohol, chloroform, and N, Ndimethylformamide (DMF). It is slightly soluble in 0.1N hydrochloric acid; very slightly soluble in n-hexane; and insoluble in water.
Dostinex tablets are oral tablets. It has leucine, USP, and lactose, NF as inactive ingredient.
Dostinex is used to treat prolactin hormone disbalance in body. It lowers down the high levels of prolactin in the body. This hormone is produced by pituitary gland. High level of prolactin in women can cause many problems such as unwanted breast milk and missed periods. It also poses difficulty in conceiving. Even men can suffer many problems with high level of prolactin. They can suffer from enlargement of breasts and decreased libido. Cabergoline blocks the release of prolactin. When this hormone’s release from pituitary gland is blocked, the level of prolactin goes down in blood.
This is an oral medicine and should be taken as per doctor’s advice. The dosages are decided on the basis of patient’s medical condition and level of prolactin in the blood.
Precautions before Using Dostinex
You should not use dostinex if you are allergic to cabergoline or other ingredients in this medicine. If you are allergic to ergot alkaloids then also do not use this medicine. Symptoms of allergy may be difficulty in breathing, swelling of face, lips, tongue or any other body part, rashes, itching and other allergic reactions. In case you are using this medicine and develop any of these allergic symptoms, immediately call your doctor. It is advisable to seek immediate medical help if you feel anything unusual while taking this medicine. You should not take this medicine in following conditions-
- If you have or had any scarring or thickening of the lungs with shortness of breath.
- If you are suffering from any heart valve disorder.
- If you are suffering from any swelling or inflammation around the heart or lungs.
- If you have any abnormal formation of tissue outside the stomach wall.
- If you are pregnant or planning to conceive.
- If you are under the age of 16.
- If the packet of medicine is tampered.
- If it has expired.
It is advisable to consult your doctor before starting this medicine. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to have a baby.
You should also consult a doctor before taking this medicine, if you are breast-feeding.
Tell your doctor about any health problem you have before going on this medicine. Certain medical conditions can worsen with use of this medicine.
