According to the latest press release, Ohio based medical equipment maker Clinical Specialist has issued a nationwide voluntary recall of Avastin unit dose syringes. The recall was initiated by the company after receiving reports of five intra-ocular infections from a physician’s office. According to reports from experts, potentially infected product could result in an infection within the eye. Avastin was packaged in sterile syringes which were being used solely for an off-label indication by an ophthalmologist for macular degeneration. The affected lots of syringes were distributed to doctors’ offices in Georgia, Louisiana, South Carolina, and Indiana from December 18, 2012 to present.

The manufacturer of the product has asked physicians and doctors to stop using the affected lot of Avastin immediately. In its recall notification the manufacturer has asked consumers to contact their doctor in case they experience any problem related to taking or using the drug product. What is Avastin

Avastin (bevacizumab) is a prescription drug indicated for the treatment of cancer. The drug interferes with the growth of carcinogenic cells and slows their growth. The mentioned prescription drug is used to treat a certain type of brain tumor, and certain types of cancers of the lung, eyes, kidney, colon and rectum. It is usually given as part of a combination of cancer medicines.
