Class action lawsuits have been filed in St. Clair County, Illinois against the Abbott Laboratories related to Depakote. These class action lawsuits are seeking damages and compensation for the plaintiffs, who suffered severe side effects due to use of Depakote. These lawsuits are asking for medical expenses and future costs on treatment. They are seeking compensation for pain suffering and loss of the plaintiffs.

The Depakote class action lawsuits are claiming compensation for pregnant mothers who used Depakote during pregnancy. Depakote is used for treatment of seizure disorders such as manic and bipolar episodes, epilepsy and migraine headaches. There are many claims across United States regarding the harmful side effects of Depakote in pregnancy. It is claimed that women, who use Depakote during pregnancy have higher risk of their baby being born with birth defects or death. These birth defects are related to brain, spinal cord or other deformities such as spina bifida, neural tube malformations, heart defects and brain defects. It is more fatal if taken during early stages of pregnancy.

Other allegation on Abbott Laboratory is that it downplayed the risk associated with Depakote. This misled health care practitioners and patients as well. The lawsuits allege Abbot Lab of cheating customers by hiding the risk after having information about the risks of side effects of valproic acid, which is one of the active ingredients in Depakote. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has also warned both patients and healthcare professionals through a statement that Depakote can lead to brain defects, spinal cord defects, craniofacial defects and cardiovascular malformations. This has strengthened the lawsuits against Abbott Labs regarding Depakote.

The lawsuits against Depakote are pouring in. It has been evident by different cases that it can lead to liver damages. If a patient experiences nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, jaundice or any other liver problem after consuming Depakote, he should immediately call a doctor. Patients with liver problem or urea cycle disorder are advised to stay away from Depakote as it can aggravate their condition. Major harm from this medicine is birth defects or liver damage in infants, if their mothers consume Depakote, while being pregnant or breast-feeding.
