Word Chiropractic has Greek origin. It is combination of two Greek words  “Cheir” and “Praktikas“. Cheir means hands and praktikas means efficient. Chiropractic is health care discipline involving efficient use of hands for restoring balance of body’s skeletal and muscular structure and its functions. It is used for providing relief from lower back pain and neck problems.

Chiropractors restore balance of bones and muscles without drugs or surgery. They manually manipulate the joints of the body to treat the problem. Chiropractic care is used as an alternative cancer treatment for reducing or treating bone or joints problems and muscle pains in cancer patients. Cancer patients may have these problems due to disease or as a side effect of the conventional treatment.

The basic concept of chiropractic is “subluxations,” or displaced spinal bones. It can cause pressure on spinal nerves and may cause damage to nervous system. Chiropractic aims at correcting the subluxation.

The chiropractors use exercises, massage, stretching, traction, electrical stimulation of the muscles, hot and cold therapy, neuro-muscular re-education, flexion-distraction technique, neuropathy treatment, ultrasound and other such treatments.

There are no scientific evidences to support the idea that chiropractic can be used for cancer treatment, but studies show that it helps in treating lower back pain and other pain due to muscle or bone problems occurring due to cancer or cancer treatment. It also encourages relaxation and stress reduction.

Uses of Chiropractic

Chiropractic is used for treating muscle and bone problems. Studies reveal chiropractic treatment may also be used for tension headaches or migraine, but the benefit is little. It helps a patient for his overall health. By restoring balance of muscle and skeletal problems, stress to the nervous system is reduced and thus healing capabilities of the body improves.

It helps in relieving pain and joint and muscle stiffness caused due to surgery, chemotherapy or radiation therapy. It helps cancer patient in dealing with different problems such as back pain, neck pain, headaches, nausea or pain or numbness in the hands and feet.

Side effects of Chiropractic

Chiropractic normally does not cause side effects but some patients may feel mild stiffness or soreness. If it is not done by experienced chiropractor, wrong manipulation of spine may cause paralysis of the legs or full-body. It is more obvious in patients who have developed weakened bones due to cancer or cancer treatment. It can cause stroke in patients having bleeding problems.

It is advisable to consult the doctor before going for chiropractic if a patient has cancer. Chiropractor should also be aware of the fact that patient is suffering from cancer. Patients suffering from bone cancer, spinal cord diseases, bone marrow diseases, leukemia, fractured bones or osteoporosis should avoid this treatment method. Patients using blood-thinning medicines should also not use it.
