Manufactured by the San Francisco-based company Genentech, a subsidiary of Roche Pharmaceuticals, Avastin (bevacizumab) was first approved in 2004 for certain types of cancers of the kidney, lung, colon, rectum, and brain that are metastatic, or have spread to other parts of the body.  Working alone or in conjunction with chemotherapy, Avastin slows the growth of new blood cells and, thereby, interferes with the development and spread of cancer cells.

Not only did the FDA withdrawn its approval of Avastin’s metastatic breast cancer indication in 2011 after concluding the drug was “not shown to be safe and effective in breast cancer patients,” it has also mandated Avastin’s label carry multiple BLACK BOX WARNINGS.    A black box warning is the most severe warning a medication can carry and still be allowed on the market.  These warnings alert medical personnel and patients of serious and often life-threatening side effects.

The following conditions are Avastin’s BLACK BOX WARNINGS.  Patients should keep a check on the following:

  1. Wound Healing Complications

Studies have linked Avastin (bevacizumab) with wound healing complications such as surgical site bleeding and wound infection.  Patients receiving Avastin along with chemotherapy experienced a 15% increase in wound healing or bleeding complications compared to those only receiving chemotherapy.  Patients should cease Avastin use 6-8 weeks or wait 28 days after ending Avastin use before having surgery.

  1. Gastrointestinal (GI) Perforation

—Abdominal pain, fever, chills, nausea and vomiting are all symptoms of a gastrointestinal perforation, a hole that develops through the wall of the stomach, small intestine, large bowel or gallbladder.   Studies show those using Avastin are at a significantly increased risk of developing this condition in comparison to those not using Avastin.  This is a medical emergency and requires immediate attention.

  1. Hemorrhage

—Caused by the rupture of a blood vessel, hemorrhages cause excessive bleeding.  Users of Avastin experience hemorrhages of the lungs, gastrointestinal area, central nervous system, and vaginal area.  This is a medical emergency and requires immediate attention.
