is an infection of the skin which usually occurs in both males and females during puberty. Because of high levels of hormones during this stage the sebaceous glands become over active and take form of an inflammation of the skin. Acne Vulgaris is the most common form of acne and is commonly known as pimples. Black heads, whiteheads, pores and uneven skin are all part of acne.  Though acne is more common during teenage, it can occur at all ages. Mostly acne affects the face, chest, back and sometimes even the neck and upper arms.

Since acne occurs at a time when a teenager is going through physical and psychological changes, it can mar the self esteem and can cause social withdrawal and depression. If left untreated for long periods, it can disfigure or scar the skin almost permanently.

How it all begins

Over active oil glands combined with the dead skin cells block hair follicles and cause growth of bacteria in the hair follicles. This causes skin infection. Acne gets further aggravated due to hormonal imbalance, stress, improper cleansing of the skin, scratching and using cosmetics that clog skin pores.

What one can do once Acne occurs?

It is important to allow the skin to breathe by keeping it free from clogging. Though it is very tempting to pick at a pimple, one should refrain from it as it will only spread the infection further. As against popular belief, acne is not caused by heredity, the food that one eats or by dirt.

Care and Treatment

Over the counter products are readily available and highly advertised, however it is always better to consult a dermatologist and take proper treatment. Benzoyl Peroxide is said to kill acne bacteria and is a common drug prescribed for acne treatment. Salicylic acid helps to peel away the top layer of the skin. Vitamin A helps reduce excessive oils in the skin.

Some natural remedies for Acne

Sandalwood powder, turmeric and lemon: Make a mixture of the 3 and apply on skin till it dries. Gently rub off and rinse with water. If the lemon irritates the skin, dilute it or substitute it with water. Turmeric is a strong antiseptic and sandalwood helps to remove extra oil from the skin. Lemon gives a shine and is a bleaching agent, so it helps lighten the marks.

Gram flour and lemon: Gram flour is a very effective face scrub and cleans the skin preserving its natural oils.

Egg White: Beat egg white and apply to the affected area. Egg is high in protein which helps generate new skins cells.

Aloe Vera: Though there are lot of Aloe Vera products available in the market, fresh Aloe Vera extract from the leaf is the most effective. Aloe Vera has healing properties and is effective in treating many skin problems.
