Increased risks of bladder cancer, heart disease and heart failure have been attributed to the diabetes drug Actos. Not only this, the drug is also known to increase the probability of rhabdomyolysis, liver damage, and bone fracture.

Actos, when launched proved to be a very promising drug to treat patients suffering from Type II diabetes. Patients suffering from type II diabetes are the ones that are not dependent upon insulin injections to control their sugar level. Actos initially was prescribed as an alternative to many drugs which were used for similar line of treatment with high risk of heart ailments and bladder cancer. However, a study conducted in the year 2010, found that even Actos carried the same risk of heart problems, bladder cancer and death.

This medicine was even recalled from France and Germany markets effective July 11, 2011, due to its likelihood of causing bladder cancer. The manufacturer of this drug, Takeda Pharmaceuticals faced problems when one of the studies confirmed the drug’s association with severe and serious health ailments. It was estimated that the suspension of Actos affected as many as 230,000 people in France alone. Federal Lawsuits were filed against Takeda Pharmaceuticals, who failed to warn consumers of the dreaded side effects of this medicine adequately. The lawsuits also allege that patients taking Actos were at far higher risk of developing bladder cancer than diabetes sufferers who were prescribed other drugs. Even the FDA recently issued alerts describing a correlation between Actos and a high probability of bladder cancer, especially in patients who took this medication for more than a year. The agency made it mandatory for the drug manufacturers to issue warnings about the possible side effects of the drug. The “Medication Guide” of the drug was modified to explicitly mention all the possible health hazards that the drug could cause, including bladder cancer.

Anybody who has suffered in any way after taking Actos may be eligible for compensation, especially those who have been diagnosed with bladder cancer.  As with any other legal claim, the Actos injury claim must be filed within the applicable statute of limitations, which may vary from one state to another and may vary depending on other case-specific variables as well.  If you or a family member took Actos and suffered one of the undisclosed side effects described on this website, please consult with a Powers Taylor attorney.  Our attorneys have experience and are well equipped to handle the most complex liability claim.
