Tequin is an antibiotic belonging to the fluoroquinolones group of drugs. It is used to fight the bacterial infections of lungs, sinuses, skin, urinary tract and some specific sexually transmitted diseases. Many people who have used this medicine have not suffered from any serious ailments; however any kind of discomforts must sure be discussed with the practitioner.

Minor Side Effects: The following are the most common side effects that people using this medication, have suffered from:

  • Pain in back
  • Change in taste
  • Hardened stools
  • Depression
  • Loose stools or diarrhea
  • Giddiness
  • Acidity or gas
  • Headache
  • Stomach problems like indigestion
  • Itching
  • Vomiting or feeling of the same
  • General pain or pain at the site of injection
  • Feeling impatient
  • Sinus inflammation
  • Insomnia
  • Sore throat
  • Lethargy

In case of using Tequin tablets or suspension or due to prolonged usage, some women may also experience vaginal irritation other than the above mentioned side effects. Vaginal infection can be marked by white patches in the mouth or a change in vaginal discharge. Whenever a new medication is started, it is always advisable that whatever discomforts may be, bothersome or not, should always be discussed with the physician and advice should be taken, in order to avoid any severe damage.

Major Side Effects: The major side effects that Tequin can cause are as listed below:

  • Unexplained increase in thirst or urination
  • Fainting or loss of consciousness

  • Continuous and severe diarrhea
  • Pain/ cramps in stomach
  • Sudden onset of precipitation/ sweat
  • Unusual giddiness or drowsiness

Though rarely but Tequin may also cause tendon rupture or joint/ muscle or tendon pain or swelling. In the advent of any of the major side effects mentioned above, the medicine should be stopped at once and the patient should seek immediate medical help.

Tequin should not be recommended to diabetic people as it has the likelihood to cause change in blood sugar. In case inevitable, a diabetic should understand the subscription and dosage well from the doctor, before starting the drug. It is also very important to monitor the blood sugar during the course of the medicine, as it may cause high or low blood sugar. High blood sugar can be determined with an increased thirst and urination while low blood sugar can be determined by nervousness, hunger, trembling or fast heartbeats.

In case a patient suffers from persistent diarrhea or stomach pain or finds blood traces in stool, weeks after Tequin has been stopped, then most likely the drug has induced pseudomembranous colitis. This is a severe intestinal condition caused by persistent bacteria. Anti- diarrhea or narcotic pain medicines should not at be used in such conditions as these will only make the condition worse. The best in this condition is to seek medical help at once.
